« It’s kind of a funny story » is a 2010 movie adapted from Ned Vizzini’s 2006 novel of the same name.
The plot: Craig is a 16 year old boy fighting depression and suicidal thoughts who commits himself to a mental hospital after a crisis. Once he realized what he has done, he wants to take back his decision and leave, but this is not an option. During the five days he spends in observation, he meets very unique personalities and is challenged to go out of his comfort zone and back to himself, to the core of what he is, what he loves, what he wants.
This is a very simple story but a very profound one. Teenage depression is a real issue in our society and it is important to give a platform to talk about it. All teenagers face some kind of anxiety and feelings of depression and this story does a really good job at showing it truthfully.
It is very sad to know that the author of the novel who wrote the book based on his own experience ended up committing suicide at the age of 32. However, the message he delivers in this story - that depression is nothing to be ashamed of, that it is common, that you can find a path to handle it, to get better, to feel happy and carefree again - has hopefully already helped and will keep helping teenagers affected by depression and the people around them to understand, talk about it and recover.
